Blog 101

If you’re still feeling your way on the Internet, or just need a refresher on how these sites work, here’s a quick primer:

Blog – short for web log, a website designed as an easily updated list of content entries called posts, usually displayed in reverse chronological order, i.e. most recent on top. If you’d like to learn more about these popular websites, there’s a good explanation here on Wikipedia.

Post – individual blog entry. Each of our news articles is published as a post, the most recent of which are displayed on the home page of our blog. If you click the headline of a story, it will take you directly to the post on its own page.

Following - this functionality sends a notification via email, RSS, Facebook or other blog when new stories (posts) are published. Just click the Follow button on the Home page (upper right) to enter your information and how often you would like to be notified of new content.

Categories – grouping of posts by general topics. You can click on a topic from the list of categories on the right side of our blog – if you can’t see it, scroll down. Assigned categories are also listed at the bottom of each post – clicking the category there will filter the site content to display only the posts assigned to that category.

Tags – another way to organize content on the blog. Tags are searchable and clickable to display all posts with the selected tag.

Older Posts – you can scroll through all the posts ever posted on our blog in reverse chronological order by scrolling to the bottom of the screen and clicking Load more posts. Or if you’re looking for something in particular, click on a link in Categories or click on a tag or use the Search bar in the upper right of the blog site.

Search – one of the easiest ways to find content on our blog. Just enter one or more words in the search field on the top navigation bar of the site and click enter. For example, enter “used uniforms” to find all related items. This will give you a more narrow set of results than just using the category filter for “Uniforms”.

WordPress – free blogging tool and user-friendly publishing site, two reasons why we’ve chosen to use WordPress for publishing OLMC Home & School News. Our news is currently hosted on the WordPress.com website – which leads us to our next point…

Advertising – WordPress.com currently publishes limited ads on post and tag pages to underwrite those services it offers for free to users. However, we are looking into affordable and manageable ways to remove the ads from our blog. In the meantime, you can block these ads by blocking cookies in your web browser settings. For instructions on how to do this, see the Help menu or online support for your particular browser, such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Safari.
