Dear Parents: We will have parent-teacher conferences next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, November 2, 3 and 4. You will receive your scheduled times this week. We have done our best to accommodate your requested time, especially if you have indicated a desire to meet with more than one teacher.
Usually we have the ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) results to give to you at this time. As of this writing, however, they have not been sent back to the school. If they have arrived by conference time, you will receive them then. If not, they will be sent home with your children and you will be notified on both the news website and on our Facebook page.
Now for my annual guidelines in order to make your conference as productive as possible:
Timeliness: This applies to both arrival and departure. Be on time and don’t overstay your time. Other parents are just as eager as you to speak with the teacher. If you need more time, ask the teacher to schedule another meeting. If something develops suddenly, so that you cannot make your appointment, please call the school office. Someone else might be able to use that time slot.
Preparation: Review your child’s report card ahead of time. That way you can focus on specific areas about which you have concerns.
Openness: Be open to the teacher’s assessment of your child. You and the teacher have the same goal: your child’s betterment. At times, this may require sharing information which parents may find difficult to hear. Rather than being upset with the messenger, collaborate with the teacher to help your student improve and achieve success. Remember that students may behave differently at school than they do at home.
The purpose of these conferences is to aid in the education of the children. I am convinced through my experience, that by following these few steps, we will attain the best results.
