Newsletter: Win $10,000 for OLMC

Principal’s Corner – October 23, 2016

Dear OLMC Community,

Conference slips went home this past week. Please make sure you return the form to your child’s teacher by Monday, October 24th. Confirmation of conference times will be sent home on Thursday. Conferences will take place November 2-4th. Please remember each of those days is a half day for the students.

The Student Council will be putting on an assembly Tuesday and will host a speaker from St. Vincent de Paul who will talk about the program and those who benefit from our school’s Catholic Schools Week drive and Works of Mercy Campaign.

For those of you who have students in grades 6-8, please be aware that the Catholic high schools open houses are approaching. If you have never attended an open house at one of our Catholic high schools, it is a fantastic opportunity for you and your student(s) to tour the school, get information on academic, co-curricular, and faith formation programs, and speak with school personnel to answer any questions you may have.

From the Falcon’s Nest: Superstition Farm

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Thanks to Food for Thought purchases, OLMC School receives a number of enriching rewards, namely our cultural arts program which oversees the field trips for our students. Recently, our kindergarteners and 7th grade buddies visited Superstition Farm in Mesa, Arizona. The students learned about life on a functioning dairy farm. The farm features a petting zoo, where students can hand feed and interact with rescue animals, guided hayrides, and a milk bar, where attendees can taste a glass of milk from the farm.

Its all thanks to your faithful participation in the Food for Thought Program. If you haven’t participated, now’s a great time to start.  Every dollar you spend, a percentage goes toward programs, services, and supplies for our students, just like these. Thank you, falcon families!

nurses-notesNurse’s Notes: Vision Screening

As part of our October health screenings, we have scheduled vision screenings for Tuesday, October 25, 2016. This year the Arizona Lions Vision Center will assist in performing vision screening for our students.

Well known for promoting vision health, the Arizona Lions Vision Center provides exams, glasses, and access to optical procedures for individuals who can not otherwise afford to have these services. Hundreds of adults and children receive assistance from the vision center every year. We are grateful to the Lions for donating their services to OLMC students.

If your student wears glasses, please make sure they have them with them on Tuesday for screening. In conjunction with screening, Nurse David will be collecting old eye glasses for donation to the Lions, to help provide frames for the under-served in our community. You may bring your donations to the front office. Thank you for your contributions.

Next month, Arizona Private Education Scholarship Fund (APESF) is hosting its first open house as an opportunity to meet and mingle with those who want to know more about what they do.

carmodyOLMC People of Interest: Mrs. Anne Carmody

At OLMC, we know that part of our mission as Catholics is to encourage our students to actively participate in the global church. In keeping with this objective, we have integrated Spanish into our curriculum as a way to provide secondary language and cultural education for our students.

One person who is a driving force in this effort is our Spanish teacher, Mrs. Anne Carmody. As our new fifth through eighth grade Spanish teacher this year, and with six children of her own, Mrs. Carmody keeps pretty busy. Read More>>

We’d like to thank Mrs. Carmody for her service to OLMC, and invite you to read more about her and our other teachers on our Faculty & Staff page.

Fall Book Fair & Literacy Awareness Month

Literacy in youth allows children to access the depth and breadth of today’s information age. We, at OLMC, recognize literacy’s role as a fundamental building block upon which all other subjects are established, which is why we integrate the Accelerated Reader Program into our educational technology curriculum.
