Principal’s Corner – November 20, 2016
Dear OLMC Community,
This week we take time away from the school year to give thanks for the many blessings God has bestowed upon us. On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff at OLMC, we wish all our families and community a very happy Thanksgiving holiday.
Please be reminded that Wednesday is a half day this week. We will celebrate our all-school mass at 11:30 a.m. and, as always, family members are welcome to attend with their student(s).
I want to thank Mr. Burkhardt and his team for their hard work in putting STEM day together for the children this year. The day was full of excitement from the egg launch/drop and the hot air balloon demonstration to learning about and seeing our school mascot, the falcon, up-close in real life. The smiles on the faces of our students and their eager enthusiasm for the day’s activities were such a joy to see.
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, there will be no learning labs this Tuesday or Thursday. All students remaining on campus after 3:15 p.m (or 12:30 p.m. this Wednesday) will be required to report to Kids Club.
Once again, I hope that your Thanksgiving break is one filled with joy, family, and peace.

2017 CYAA Soccer Tournament Signups & Coaches Needed
The Catholic Youth Athletic Association (CYAA) is hosting a soccer tournament February 4-10, 2017 for 5th-6th grades and February 11-16, 2017 for 7th-8th grades. The sign-up deadline is fast approaching and scheduled for November 21st.

At OLMC, we emphasize the importance of service to our students, and we’re fortunate to know and love many service men and women among our OLMC families. Recently, our kindergarten was fortunate enough to receive a visit from Sergeant Marquez, father of one of our students, Abie Marquez, who spoke about what it means to be a veteran. Our girl scouts also marched in Tempe’s Veterans Day Parade. We’d like to thank Sergeant Marquez and all of the service men and women who so valiantly display what service truly means.
Timmy Mulligan Wins Local Coding Competition
Over the weekend, one hundred middle school and high-school-aged students from around the valley participated in Code Day, a local coding competition celebrating a national campaign to promote the importance of coding in twenty-first century technology.
Participating students were asked to design, create, and code a video game project to present before a panel of judges, parents, and their peers. OLMC 6th grader, Timmy Mulligan, was among the competitors, alongside his two teammates from Kyrene Middle School. Timmy and his teammates, Team Underdogs, worked through the night, and Timmy, himself, gave the demonstration presentation, speaking on behalf of his team.
Of the 17 teams present, Team Underdogs took home the Top Overall Award for the competition. The youngest and least experienced of the group, Team Underdogs represented the essence of the competition: focus, determination, and teamwork. The judges were impressed with their enthusiasm and skill. OLMC would like to congratulate Timmy and his teammates for this outstanding accomplishment. Way to go, Team Underdogs!
