Principal’s Corner – December 18, 2016
Dear OLMC Community,
This week we bring first semester to a close and prepare for Christmas break. I hope you can all join us at 7:00 p.m. on Monday night for the Christmas program in the church. Please remember to go to the classrooms after the show ends to pick up your students.
Tuesday is a half day and we will celebrate our all-school Mass. Please make sure students dress in proper Mass attire.
Please remember to enter and proceed through the parking lot slowly before and after school. Thank you for being diligent in keeping our students and parents safe.
For any of you still looking to complete your Christmas shopping, just a reminder that food for thought will be available Monday before and after the Christmas program, as well as before and after school Monday and Tuesday.
As this is the final edition of the Principal’s Corner prior to break, on behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May the coming year be full of many blessings for each of our families. Thank you for allowing us to work with your children and partner with you in support of their growth and the growth of our community at large. May God bless you all during this Christmas season.

This Week on Campus: Countdown to Christmas
We’re in the final days of Advent, and our students welcome our Lord with open arms! Our student council visited with veterans on Pearl Harbor Day, singing Christmas carols to the residents of the Community Living Center at the VA hospital. They also delivered 18 Christmas trees and 360 cards from OLMC students.
In the 5th grade, our students made Advent Magi boxes filled with all the kind and loving things the students would be doing for their families during Advent. Our thanks goes out to Mrs. Shewbridge for her help with this project. The students also made O Antiphons ornaments, an Advent tradition dating back to the 8th century. Used during the 4th week of Advent, the ornaments display titles that the Old Testament prophets gave to Jesus as they waited for his coming.
And finally, our 1st and 6th grade buddies made gingerbread houses together and exchanged gifts. It was the perfect opportunity for the buddies, both big and little, to celebrate the mentor relationship OLMC’s buddy program inspires. On behalf of OLMC, we wish everyone a fun and safe Christmas break!

Christmas Gifts for Teachers
Letters from OLMC’s Home & School board went home with the students that include a form for donations toward FFT gift cards for the teachers and staff as Christmas gifts. This is a convenient way to honor your children’s teachers with a gift card of their choosing.
You’re welcome to still make a contribution to the envelopes located in the office. Donations are completely voluntary, but always appreciated. On behalf of Home & School, thank you for giving back to our teachers and staff!
Technology in the Classroom: Google Apps
OLMC’s commitment to 21st century learning prepares our students for what lies ahead in the constantly evolving world of technology. Gone are the days of film strip reels and spiral notebooks. Google for education has revolutionized the way teachers engage their students in the classroom. By equipping them with the skills they’re certain to use in both higher learning and in their careers, OLMC integrates the latest technology tools and curricula into the everyday. From general use protocols, to digital citizenship, teachers use chromebooks, tablets, and applications to train students to collaborate on projects and presentations in new and revolutionary ways.

Coming Soon: JPII Young Philosophers Club
Would you like to give your children the opportunity to practice civil discourse and learn how to think more critically? Do you want to to give them the tools to defend their Catholic faith? OLMC is launching an apologetics club for students in the 6th through 8th grades starting in January.
Club members will have the chance to work with community experts to explore and understand the Catholic perspective on topics such as catholic culture vs. pop culture, the differences between animals and humans, how we know that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, etc. They will learn how to ask critical questions about these topics, develop their own defenses of these truths, and debate among themselves in a civil manner.
Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks! Questions? Interested in helping? Contact Mary Crowell.
