Teacher Appreciation Week

National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 1st through 5th, and Home & School would like to make the week extra special for our dedicated educators, in gratitude for all of their diligent work, for their loving encouragement, and for the profound difference they make in the lives of our children.

Your contributions and the simple acts listed above will help Home & School celebrate the hardworking professionals who offer their skills toward a  worthy cause, Catholic education. On behalf of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, we’d like to thank all those who work in tandem with parents to raise a generation of faith-followers, responsible citizens, effective communicators, critical-thinkers, problem-solvers, and quality producers.

Newsletter: Happy Easter

Principal’s Corner – April 16, 2017

hermie

Dear OLMC Community:

Thank you to all who attended our Trek through the Desert and the Living Stations of the Cross last Wednesday. The students did a fantastic job throughout these activities, and it was a wonderful way to move into Easter weekend.

It is hard to believe, but when we return, there are only five weeks of school left. There is still much to do before the year closes and many events to celebrate.  Here are some of the dates and events for your calendar:

  • May 2nd: New Family Night– All families who are new to OLMC are invited to come join us for an important informational night about the school in preparation for the 2017-2018 school year.
  • May 5th: May Crowning Mass– Mass will begin at 11:15 a.m. and school will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. Please note that students should dress in Mass attire on this day, and there will be no school Mass on Wednesday, May 3rd.
  • May 10th: Kindergarten Stars and Stripes Performance– An annual OLMC favorite, our kindergartners will bring the history of the United States to life in McCready Hall.
  • May 13th: First Communion/Confirmation of our third grade class in the OLMC church.
  • May 17th: 8th Grade Graduation in the OLMC Church.
  • May 26th: Last day of school– Dismissal at 12:30 p.m.

Once again, please note that the last day of school is a half day with a 12:30 p.m. dismissal.

On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff at OLMC, I want to wish you all a blessed Easter and a safe and relaxing Easter break. I hope the time spent with your families is enjoyable and fulfilling.

Sincerely,

Bruce Hermie
Principal
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School

No School for Easter Break

There is no school April 13th through April April 21st due to Easter break. On behalf of OLMC, we wish our families a very happy and blessed Easter.

This Week on Campus

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Our short week was nevertheless full of hard work and meaningful tradition.

The kindergartners explored magnets and polarity in six science centers. They also used white boards to create the four math sentences associated with the numbers 2, 4, and 6.

Our fourth grade students visited the Pueblo Grande Museum in Phoenix, whose mission is encouraging the public “to understand and appreciate how archaeology, history, and culture studies can enrich our lives and further our understanding of our shared history and heritage.”

The students had a great day studying the Hohokam culture and enjoyed creating their own petroglyph art piece. They also learned what homes were like thousands of years ago. We’d like to thank those that participate in the FFT program, which funds learning experiences like this one.

Last week, our 5th graders presented the Stations of the Cross, and our community had our annual parish festival. We’d like to thank all who attended, volunteered, and sponsored the event.

And finally, our school marked Holy Week with our annual Trek Through the Desert. Many students pitched in to help, including our first graders who served as our Red Sea.

The day concluded with the Living Stations of the Cross presentation by the eighth grade students. We wish our entire community a blessed and safe Easter break.

Tips from the FFT Pros

With the FFT deadline looming and our April FFT contest in full swing, the time to get your last minute FFT purchases in is now! There are so many ways you can incorporate FFT into your everyday life and benefit OLMC in the process.

Here are some tips from our seasoned families:

“I subscribe to a few services through Amazon and iTunes. It was easy to just buy a prepaid card and load it onto the account. It debits the prepaid card before it charges my account. Once it runs out I get a charge to my account and know it’s time to buy a new prepaid FFT card.”-The Rosensteel Family

“Some of the bills that we pay with Visa gift cards are: Cox Internet, Verizon Wireless, our alarm company, City of Tempe utilities, our kids classes through Tempe Parks and Recreation, gas, and Costco purchases. I do most of my grocery shopping at Fry’s or Trader Joe’s so that’s how much I get in Visa gift cards. Also, the scrip app is very helpful when we are on the go. We’ve ordered many instant gift cards through the app such as CVS and Walgreen’s for monthly prescriptions, Lowe’s gift cards, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Children’s Place, Gymboree, whatever we need. The app lets us see which one has the highest rebate. It’s so easy to use!”-The Lopez Family

“What helped us the most is rather than spending a lot of time searching through the entire list trying to figure out everything we might do and getting a little of everything, we just regularly buy a few gift cards that we use all the time. It helps to develop the habit of actually using scrip, because we would often forget to use it. Consistency and making it a habit with one or two stores or restaurants has been much more effective than trying to buy everything.”-The Kochis Family

“Planning is most crucial if your budget is tighter.”-The Molina Family

“We love Culver’s, Panda Express, and Little Caesars, and we go there all the time. So, for us, that’s a for sure buy!”-The Flores Family

Questions? Contact our FFT representatives for their best FFT tips. A big thank you to all those who shared their helpful FFT hints this year. If you have a helpful tip or trick, send it along to news@olmctempe.com. Thanks for your support!
