1. PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Dear Parents,

This year many Catholic leaders are exploring the topic of the Youth, the Faith and Vocational Discernment. To celebrate this, Father John blessed a Crucifix during the Wednesday Mass, and it is currently displayed in KA. Each week the crucifix will travel from classroom to classroom with a book of prayers. In conjunction with the commencement of the traveling crucifix, this past week the Faith Formation Committee volunteered in each classroom helping the students create their own crucifix icon of the San Damiano Crucifix. The artwork turned out beautifully! Additionally, you may have heard that each classroom has “adopted” one or two seminarians to pray for throughout the year as they are discerning their vocations.

I want to thank the Faith Formation Committee and all the parents who volunteered to help with Art Masterpiece. Your time and talent are appreciated!

On October 4th we will have our annual Pet Blessing to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. Children in kindergarten through third grade will be able to have their pets blessed. The pets are to remain with mom or dad and be taken home immediately after the blessing. In lieu of bringing your pet, your child may bring a stuffed animal to the blessing to represent the pet.

Also on October 4th we will also host a “How to Afford a Catholic Education” night in the Library. If you have not had an opportunity to attend, please do so.

Over the weekend of October 6thand 7th, we are asking the school children to wear their uniforms to Mass in celebration of Catholic schools. At each of these Masses members of the Student Leadership Team will be passing out information about Catholic Education Arizona and how to donate funds to the school so every child who wants a Catholic education is able to afford one. Please show your support by having your children wear their uniforms. Thank you.

Friday, October 5th is a first Friday 12:30 dismissal. The children may wear their spirit shirts and jeans or jean shorts. Please see the handbook for any questions pertaining to the Spirit Day dress.

Sincerely,

Kelly Shewbridge

HEALTH SCREENINGS

healthy clinic doctor healthOctober is the month in which student health screenings are done. As in years past, students will be evaluated in the areas of height, weight, vision, blood pressure, and, for some grades, hearing. Vision screening will take place for all students on Wednesday, October 3, 2018. The remaining parameters will be measured over the next four weeks. The state of Arizona mandates annual health screenings; however, if you wish to exempt your child from these screenings, please notify the nurse’s office. Upon completion of your child’s screening, you will be notified, in writing, of any finding which indicates a need for follow-up.  If there is no need for follow-up, the results will become part of your child’s electronic health file and are always available to you at your request.

BLOOD DRIVE THANK YOU

Thank you to all who came out to support our recent blood drive. Because of your kindness and willingness to donate, we had the best drive in the history of OLMC blood drives! At the end of the day, a total of 55 units of blood was collected!  The truly amazing thing is that each single donation can save several lives because blood can be separated into several components. The blood collected at OLMC’s drive can help save up to 165 lives! Our gratitude goes out not only to the donors but to all who offered prayers on our behalf.

Thank you!

1. PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Dear OLMC Community:

Recently, the first graders hosted their grandparents for Grandparents Day! We were honored to have them as our special guests. They visited with their grandchild, enjoyed some refreshments and listened to the children sing some songs. After the celebration they walked to the church and celebrated mass with the entire school community. It was wonderful to see so many generations praying and worshipping together!

Next week we will have picture day on Wednesday, September 26th. The photo order forms came home Friday with the children. Students should be in mass uniforms for pictures. If you have any questions, please contact the front office.

Sincerely,

Kelly Shewbridge

1. PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Dear OLMC Families,

One of the many benefits of the FFT Program is that it helps fund field trips, and this week had the first field trip of the year. The seventh graders went to the Arizona Science Lab. In Language Arts, the seventh graders have been reading Rocket Boys, which is a memoir about Homer Hickman, a NASA engineer who dreamed of launching rockets into outer space. Prior to going to the lab, Tom Balu, Mrs. Knox’s cousin, who is a rocket engineer, came to school and spoke to the children about how rockets work.

While at the Arizona Science Lab, the children listened to a presentation of Newton’s Laws to learn how and why rockets work. Then they learned how to calculate how high the rocket could launch. The children were put into groups where they created and launched their own rockets. The rocket that flew the highest went 369 feet in the air!

Friday is a half-day with a 12:30 p.m. early dismissal. Students are permitted to wear spirit shirts on Friday with their uniform shorts, pants, skirts or skorts. No jeans should be worn as it is not a first Friday.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Shewbridge

Principal

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School
